The Event Formally Known As The Townsman
In order to address the confusion that has arisen over the last couple of months regarding the event being advertised as the Townsman we would like to clarify the situation.
In August 2016 the Free Radicals Tribe ran a long course event over 3 days with a 3.8km swim on Friday, a 180km ride on Saturday and culminating with the marathon on Sunday at the Townsville Running Festival. This event was run and promoted as the Townsman. In December 2016 as part of the FRT annual planning process the long course event was again added to the FRT event calendar along with the addition of a 70.3 and Standard distance option.
At the end of February 2017 another organisation trademarked the name and started promoting the event as their own without any knowledge or authorisation of FRT. Subsequently FRT was threatened with legal action if we continued to use the name. After extensive consultation with Triathlon Queensland and taking legal advice, the committee has reluctantly and unanimously made the decision not to proceed with the event. The costs involved in pursuing legal action are potentially extensive (over $10k has been quoted) and that money is better spent on our members, running events or buying more equipment.
As an alternative to a formal long course event we will instead be offering a social, family orientated weekend for club members, The Radical Weekend.
